About MAW

The Mycological Association of Washington (MAW) is a nonprofit association whose purpose is to disseminate a reliable body of knowledge regarding fungi. Its members join the association to learn, develop information, and present information about fungi, including the recognition of various species, and the collection and use of mushrooms for scientific and culinary purposes.

MAW strives to acquaint both members and the general public with the importance of mycology, and to promote fellowship among mycophiles.

To carry out these purposes, MAW holds monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month, and other activities such as: photographic exhibits or contests, mushroom forays and field trips. Programs for past meetings have included such diverse topics as: truffle culture including tasting, a panel discussion on hunting the elusive morel, tips on mushroom photography, the use of fungi in traditional Chinese medicine, wild gathered foods tasting (annual), identification key to the boletes, weather prediction and use of an almanac, slime molds, mushroom toxicity and hallucinogens, and how to use mushroom identification keys.

MAW publishes the quarterly newsletter the Potomac Sporophore, and notices to inform its members about activities and mycological knowledge.

MAW runs an e-mail listserver so that its members can exchange mushroom information, tips, and foray updates with each other.

MAW periodically gives suitable recognition, including honorary membership, to members, students, and scientists for signal achievements in mycology or services to the Association.

MAW does not attempt to influence legislation nor does it participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of a candidate for public office.

Membership is open to all persons who have an interest in mycology, or the use of mushrooms as food, dye products, art objects, or related areas of interest. Any interested person will become a member upon submittal of an application and the appropriate fees and will remain a member by continuing payment of annual dues.

Elected officers of the MAW Executive Board include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Culinary Chair, Newsletter Editor, Foray Chair, Membership Chair, Program Chair and NAMA (North American Mycological Association) Trustee.
